The Power of Choosing

Words by Alisa Stanton.

You are as amazing as the choices you make.

This is a quote I have on my wall. Simple and profound, it is also a slogan of Fairtrade Canada. I like it because it reminds me that often, my passion comes from my choices, not the other way around. It also reminds me that the act of making choices holds a lot of power because it can propel you forward.

Ever have those days (or weeks, or months) where you feel lost? Where you can’t seem to find a spark, direction or passion? We all do. What I have found, however, is that if you aren’t sure what you’re passionate about or where you’re heading, making choices (even small ones like taking time to reflect on a situation, go to a new yoga class or meeting a friend for coffee and life chats ) can help you uncover how you truly feel. And that most likely, if you keep trying, you’ll find something that moves you.

When I was a student, I was overwhelmed by ALL the possibilities for my future. I wanted to see clear to the end of the path, and understand how it would all unfold. The truth is, from where I stood then, there was no possible way I could have seen where I am now. I didn’t even know my current job existed, let alone all the wonderful things it would entail or the wonderful people I’d meet.

All of the energy I expended worrying about not being able to see where the path was taking me would have been better spent enjoying every moment of where I was then, and focusing on making good choices. At the end of the day, I did make good choices, but the worrying could have been discarded with absolutely little or no effect on where I am now.

I believe that the path to success must be taken in small steps. Your choices may seem inconsequential or massive, but if they are good choices (constructive, healthy and honest) and true choices for you because you feel they are right, they will likely be leading you on the right path.  Don’t let the scale of future possibilities blur your vision of the present moment. The moment (yes, this one right now) is where your power is.

There are two quotes I draw strength from when I’m stuck or not sure about what choice to make. The first one reminds me that even when you can’t see where you are or where you’re going, you can keep moving forward.

“When you have come to the edge

Of all the light you know.

And are about to step off

Into the darkness of the unknown.

Faith is knowing

One of two things will happen:

There will be something solid to stand on;

Or you will be taught how to fly.”

– A modification of a poem by Patrick Overton

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
