I’ve always enjoyed perusing second-hand and vintage stores. The process of searching through piles of old things to find the ultimate gem brings me back time and time again. But there’s more to vintage than the hunt. Here’s why I shop second-hand.
1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The number one reason I buy vintage is because of the positive impact it has on the environment. Buying used things instead of new means more items stay out of the landfill and less new items are produced.
2. The Quality
Many things aren’t made at the same quality level as they used to be. We’re lucky to experience the last leg of vintage clothing and furniture before it completely disintegrates. And lucky for us, most old styles are back in style again, such as mid-century furniture and wide-legged pants.
3. Where the Money Goes
A number of vintage and second-hand shops (like the infamous Value Village and My Sister’s Closet) benefit your community. Giving back to your community through the purchase of second-hand goods has got to be the easiest way to get involved and make a difference. Many people live busy lives and can’t take time to volunteer. Making sure your money goes to a good cause is easy and helps others.
4. Support Local
It’s important to support local business, as they’re the underdogs that drive our economy. Statistically, Small Business BC has found that small businesses in BC contribute 31% to our economy. By shopping at vintage and second-hands shops you’re supporting a small business owner.
5. It’s Unique
Although it’s easy to want to be a shy wallflower, it’s fun to pick bold clothing and furniture that speaks to your personal style. Finding an older piece means nobody else in your city will have that exact thing!
I hope this inspires you to search your local pound-shop, antique store, or Salvation Army to find a special piece. There is a time and place for shopping large scale stores, but don’t forget the little guys! They are trying to make a living and are helping others do so. Happy hunting!
